walking tracks in Tasmania

Lake Skinner

To reach the starting point of the Lake Skinner track, drive to Judbury and then continue driving west on Lonnavale Road. Just after crossing the Russell River, the road forks. Take the left fork here into Denison Road. Stick to the Denison Road on the right when there’s another fork (Weld Rd) shortly after crossing the Little Denison River. There’s a signposted turn off on the to the Lake Skinner track here. Stay on the Denison Road until a right turn into McDougalls Road. Follow the signs until you reach the carpark at the end of McDougalls Road and the start of the walking track.

The start of the track is clearly marked. After about 15 minutes of walking, the track joins an older track and climbs gradually through mossy rainforest. The track ascends moderately through more open vegetation of teatree, eucalypt and myrtle and then becomes steeper and rockier before emerging at Lake Skinner.

Note:
This walk can be wet underfoot at any time of year and visibility can be reduced suddenly by mist and low cloud. The weather in Tasmania’s high country can change rapidly. Carry clothing that can withstand harsh and unexpected weather conditions, including snow – even in summer.

Approximately 7 km return. Allow 4 hours for this walk
